Maharishi Parāśara and Vedic Weather Forecasting Compared to FitzRoy.

An Intercultural Critique of Sources on the History of Meteorology.

Who deserves the credit for “inventing” weather forecasting? The British Admiral Robert FitzRoy, who coined the term “weather forecast” in the 19th century? Or are there much earlier, systematically developed weather observations in other cultural contexts?

A look into the Vedic culture of India reveals astonishing depth: Over two thousand years ago, Maharishi Parāśara, the author of the Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra, described detailed cycles, planetary influences, and climatic processes. This article illuminates ancient Indian meteorology, its astrological and ecological foundations, and relates it to modern Western meteorology—with particular attention to intercultural source criticism.

1. The European Attribution: FitzRoy as the “Inventor”?

In a recent broadcast on the German radio station WDR 5 (Zeitzeichen, 2025), Admiral Robert FitzRoy (1805–1865) was presented as the “inventor of weather forecasting.”

While FitzRoy undoubtedly played a significant role in the development of modern, instrument-based weather warning systems—including the establishment of the first national meteorological service in Great Britain and the publication of storm warnings via telegraph—these achievements are based on technological advancements, not on the beginning of weather observation itself.

Criticism: The broadcast completely ignores pre-colonial, non-Western sources and presents European scientific discourse as the sole origin of meteorological knowledge. This reflects a Eurocentric narrative that does not reflect historical reality.

2. Maharishi Parāśara and Vedic Weather Astrology

Centuries before FitzRoy, Maharishi Parāśara (probably 600–800 CE) developed a complex system for climate prediction based on astrology in his Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra (BPHS). This work, a mainstay of Vedic astrology (Jyotiṣa), includes, among other things:

analysis of annual cycles (Samvatsara Phala);

monthly weather cycles depending on the lunar phase (Nakṣatras);

planetary constellations as indicators of rain, drought, and storms;

and interpretation of solar and lunar eclipses as climatic turning points

This cyclical weather logic was closely linked to agriculture, the ethics of natural living, and a spiritual cosmology.

3. Further Vedic sources on meteorology

a) Rigveda (c. 1500–1200 BCE)

Gods such as Parjanya (rain), Indra (thunder), Vayu (wind), and Surya (sun) are celebrated in numerous hymns.

This portrayal points to an early symbolic systematization of natural phenomena.

b) Atharvaveda (c. 1200–1000 BCE)

Contains practical verses for bringing about rain, healing drought, and protecting seeds.

Examples show how weather phenomena were ritualized and functionally categorized.

c) Mahabharata (c. 400 BC – 400 AD)

Contains numerous astronomical and climatic observations:

comets, solar and lunar eclipses, floods

, storms and drought as omens.

The cosmos reflects the climate of the time – an expression of an ecological-spiritual world order.

d) Bṛhat Samhitā by Varāhamihira (6th century CE)

Compendium of over 100 chapters on natural history, astrology, and agriculture

Contains precise chapters on cloud observation, monsoon rules, animal behavior

Systematic weather observation with agricultural application (today: “phenological” methods)

4. Structure of Vedic Weather Forecasting

Vedic astrology uses four key categories for weather forecasting:

5. Intercultural source criticism and epistemological reflection

a) Eurocentrism in the history of science

The notion that meteorological knowledge only began with modern science overlooks the achievements of non-Western cultures.

The narrative of the “great European inventor” systematically ignores continental philosophical, Vedic, Arabic, and Chinese sources of knowledge.

b) Neglect of symbolic-cyclic science

While modern meteorology is based on causal explanatory models, Vedic systems utilize analogical, cyclical, and symbolic methods.

These are often considered “pre-rational”—unjustly so. In reality, they are coherent, cohesive systems of interpretation whose validity was functional within their historical contexts.

6. Conclusion: Who really invented weather forecasting?

Weather forecasting is not a Western monopoly. Robert FitzRoy was a pioneer of instrumental early warning systems, but not the first to systematically observe or predict weather. Rather, Vedic astrology under Maharishi Parāśara shows that a profound, cyclically oriented weather model existed centuries before FitzRoy—with astonishing precision and agricultural application.
